Haiti’s Men’s National Team Heads to the World Cup

Celebrating the Beautiful Game, from our local Women’s League to the Global Stage

After more than 50 years, Haiti’s Men’s National Team is returning to the World Cup this summer. It’s an historic achievement and a powerful reminder of the deep talent and love for the beautiful game across Haiti. To celebrate, we’re hosting a World Cup Watch Party for Haiti’s first match vs. Scotland on Saturday, June 13 @ 6:30pm at Ghost Box Pizza (downstairs!) in Lafayette. Join us for an evening of community, pizza, drinks, and plenty of cheering as we rally behind the Haitian national team. (Optional registration at bottom of this post — not necessary to register, but it’s helpful if you have a moment!)

We’re also excited to be supporting a World Cup watch party in Petit Trou, where community members will gather to cheer on Les Grenadiers! We’ll be connecting across locations – FaceTiming, sharing photos, and celebrating side by side in real time as Haiti takes the field on the world stage. Whether you’re a lifelong supporter or just looking for a fun way to connect, all are welcome!

Is soccer big in petit trou?

Yes! If it isn’t raining, you are likely to find people playing soccer in the later afternoon as the sun goes down. That said, most of these informal pickup games have historically been made up of boys and men. For this reason, our local leaders requested funding for a women’s soccer league in the Petit Trou, which we proudly support through ASFPN and our girls’ empowerment program.

During the season, 6 teams from across the region come together regularly for organized, competitive play. These Friday evening matches have become something much bigger than sport – they’re a community gathering point — lively, joyful, and deeply rooted in connection, with families, friends, and neighbors showing up to cheer from the sidelines. The league is also a powerful expression of what we believe in: creating space for girls and women to lead, build confidence, and experience the strength of community support. On the field, you see teamwork, skill, and joy – but you also see opportunity being built in real time.

(Relevant note: Haiti’s Women’s national team has had success on the global stage, highlighted by the country’s first-ever Women’s World Cup appearance in 2023!)
