Earthquake Response

Even before the recent earthquake struck five miles from Petit Trou, our partners in Haiti were facing immense challenges. The days since have been beyond difficult. Through our response, we continue to support the vision of our local partners, and thanks to your support, we are making a direct, local, and tangible difference.

The need right now is immense, and our community in the U.S has responded. You’ve stepped up, and since the earthquake on August 14th, we’ve received over 1,000 gifts — totaling over $90,000 — every penny of which is either already in Haiti or on its way there to support community-driven initiatives. We know that local leaders are best able to identify and meet community needs. We also know that there is an urgent need to get donations directly to Haitian people.

Our initial response is sending 100 percent of the funds referenced above to the locally led programs below.

emergency shelter

Working with local partners to build 20 medium-term, covered structures for community members who’ve lost their homes and are sleeping outdoors or in community centers.

structural assessments & transition planning

In collaboration with a local engineer based in Port-au-Prince, assessing structural integrity of partner facilities, consulting with mayor and community groups, and creating plans for quality control and provisional housing.

local grants program

Offering targeted immediate cash grants to key leaders, institutions, and community groups in Petit Trou to meet basic needs of food, water, and cleanup.

requested supplies & partnerships

Provisioning requested supplies to community members and partners for shelter, emergency response needs, and hygiene. Most of these are purchased in-country, some specialized goods we facilitated and shipped in cooperation with our partners at Direct Relief.

In addition to these relief efforts, we’re reinforcing our existing programs and working toward long-term strategy, campus planning, and infrastructure support, including buildings, water, and food systems. We’re grateful that the new school building recently constructed on St. Paul’s campus has proven to be structurally sound and is acting as a safe space for community members. In the coming days and weeks we will transition from assessments to further investments in safe, durable structures that can keep essential work moving forward in Petit Trou.

Please consider a donation to keep initiatives like these moving forward in support of our partners in Petit Trou.
