Sainvilson Guerrier: Promoting Health and Hope in Petit Trou

Preface: As part of our commitment to community health, we partner with local leaders in Petit Trou and the Haitian Ministry of Health (MSPP) to reinforce health structures. We provide direct assistance to the public health system and support 39 Community Health Workers. These women and men work with the local hospital to provide first aid and front-line emergency response, as well as support community health initiatives, including mobile vaccination and education campaigns. Recent USAID cuts have significantly reduced the healthcare workforce in the region, placing high demands on Locally Haiti-supported Community Health Workers, including Sainvilson Guerrier, whose work is a lifeline for so many.

Sainvilson Guerrier plays a key role in promoting community health and well-being in his hometown of Petit-Trou de Nippes, Haiti. Serving as a Community Health Worker—locally known as an Agent Santé Communautare Polyvalent (ASCP), Sainvilson splits his time between hospital shifts and traveling with a mobile clinic. He administers vaccinations, checks in on mothers and children, offers nutrition education, and addresses a wide range of basic health needs across the community.

Sainvilson: Baby Check

Regular visits with mothers and children is a key role of Community Health Workers.

Driven by a passion for learning, Sainvilson has explored a variety of fields, including Theology, Law, Computer Science, and Communications. These have enhanced his perspective and contributed to his passion to serve. After completing the Community Health training with Locally Haiti (Colorado Haiti Project at the time), he began working at the Petit-Trou Hospital in 2017.

Sainvilson enjoys his work because it’s an opportunity to help others. "There is nothing better than life,” he says, “and there is no life without health. So helping people to keep healthy is the most important way to help."

Sainvilson grew up in a large family, the third born of nine children. Now married for eight years with two children of his own, Sainvilson is a well-known and respected figure in Petit-Trou, not only as a community health worker but also as an entrepreneur. When he’s not caring for patients, he channels his energy into selling electronic devices, food, and cosmetic products. Sainvilson is also an avid reader who enjoys conversation and a good debate.

Looking ahead, Sainvilson plans to run for mayor in the upcoming election, motivated by a vision to lead and inspire. His greatest aspiration is to be a positive role model for Haiti’s youth and to help build a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.
