Hunger in Petit Trou: A Local Report

Hurricane Melissa recently brought rain, flooding, and devastation to Haiti. While tragic loss of life occurred in other parts of the country, we were grateful that our partners remained safe in Petit Trou. However, there was significant damage to gardens and farms, which highlights a crisis facing our community - rising hunger and the urgent need to produce more food locally.

A few weeks before the hurricane, Agronomist Pierrette Décime and Project Coordinator Florkensie Lapointe conducted a comprehensive interview with 14 community based organizations. These organizations, all based in Petit Trou, were polled to learn more about the challenges the community is facing and to hear what solutions local leaders proposed.

In the coming weeks and months, Locally Haiti plans to launch new initiatives that respond to this growing hunger crisis by listening to local leaders, and investing in their talents and ideas.
